Football is a funny old game, and it’s been a wild summer of international tournaments with many ups and downs in the European Championships and Copa America (Congratulations to Argentina and Spain by the way). Today though we are going to be taking a look at the action that takes place off the field and dive into some of the football’s most quirky and unique sponsorship deals. The selection process for this has stood out to us here in the office at Historyofscoccer, so if you feel we have missed any out feel free to let us know in the comments.
Watford Delve Into the Crypto Currency Market
We will start with one of the more unique and modern sponsors first, and that is of course Watford F.C’s collaboration with Bitcoin. For a fair few seasons now they have had the logo of the world’s first and most famous cryptocurrency adorned on their shirt sleeve, and I think this a deal that truly is a sign of modern times. Interestingly enough Watford is currently 8/1 to get promoted to the Premier League next season. Ironically, I got this information from betpanda bitcoin casino UK which I feel is quite fitting! Cryptocurrency doesn’t seem to be going anywhere so I fully expect more teams to embrace it more in the future. I mean we are already seeing teams use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as products so it feels like this is only the beginning.
Hull City Take Us On An Adventure To Flamingo Land
Unsurprisingly Hull City have made the list, I say unsurprisingly as former chairman Assem Allam was an absolute madman god rest his soul. Flamingo Land is a theme park located near the city of Hull so it’s not out of the question that it would be a reasonable sponsor for the club, I think the fact it’s so strange is the fear of dread it must have put into the heart of Hull City supporters as the recently deceased chairman may have used this opportunity to concoct another one of his wacky hair-brained schemes.
Everton Embrace Some Angry Birds
This one drew a few smirks from many rival fans in the United Kingdom but actually turned out to be a stroke of genius. The Toffees timed this one superbly with the mobile-based game being at the height of its popularity at the time and even going on to spawn a couple of relatively successful feature-length films. It’s a shame that the Mersyside-based outfit hasn’t had much success with their business deals in recent times as their recent financial struggles have been well documented and have even led to points deductions. To Everton’s credit though under the stewardship of Sean Dyche, they managed to stay in the division, they will just hope no more trouble lies ahead and they can kick on.
So that brings us to the end of our quirky little list. This may well be something we revisit in the future as there are far more whimsical and wonderful (and sometimes downright daft) business deals related to the world of football.
