The eight FIFA Women World Cup past winners have been won by four national teams. After winning it at the 2019 tournament in France, the United States are the current champion. This was their fourth victory. Germany also won two titles, while Japan and Norway each won one.
The Women’s World Cup has been hosted by six countries. Canada, France, Germany, and Sweden have hosted the tournament once, while China and the United States have staged it twice.
In 2023, Australia and New Zealand will jointly host the Women’s World Cup, a first for the Southern Hemisphere and the first for two countries.
Women’s World Cup Winners List
1991
1991 was the first year of the Women’s World Cup. The two teams in the championship match were the United States and Norway. Despite the close score of 2-1 at the end of regulation time, the United States was able to pull away with the win.
Carin Jennings-Cabarra, Michelle Akers, and April Heinrichs formed a front line known as the “triple-edged sword.” They were one of the first teams to play with three forwards and were considered one of the most potent front lines of the time.

Akers and Jennings scored two goals in the final game, and they both won awards at the end of the tournament. Jennings was named Player of the Tournament, and Akers won the Golden Boot award for scoring the most goals.
The United States became the first name on the FIFA Women World Cup past winners list.
1995
Sweden was the host country for the 1995 Women’s World Cup. Norway walked away with the win after defeating Germany in the championship game.
The final score was 2-0, and both Hege Riise and Marianne Pettersen scored. Sweden claiming the title made them the first European Nation ever to win the Women’s World Cup.
The tournament’s top scorer was the Norwegian player Ann Kristin Aarønes with six goals. Also from Norway, Hege Riise was named the tournament’s best player.
1999
In the 1999 Women’s World Cup, the United States took the title for the second time. They defeated China in the championship game after a penalty kick shootout score of 5 to 4.
Ninety thousand, one hundred and eighty-five people attended the final game. This set the international record for the amount of people at a women’s sporting event, although that number has since been broken.

Sissi, from Brazil’s national team, was one of the top scorers with seven goals. Chinese player Sun Wen also had seven goals in the tournament, and in addition to being one of the top scorers, she was named the best player of the 1999 World Cup.
This was also the first time all the referees and match officials were female.
2003
In the 2003 Women’s World Cup, the German National Team was the champion. Doing this made them the first country to win both the men’s and women’s World Cup. Sweden was winning the game 1-0 lead in the final match going into halftime.
Shortly after the start of the second half, though, German player Maren Meinert scored a goal to tie the game 1 to 1. At the end of regulation time, the score still stood, so the game went into overtime.
In the eighth minute of extra time, Nia Künzer scored a golden goal from a header. Germany had won their first women’s World Cup title and became the third nation to be added to the FIFA Women World Cup past winners list.
At the end of the tournament, the top scorer (Birgit Prinz), the best player (Birgit Prinz), and the best goalkeeper (Silke Rottenberg) were all given to German players.
2007
The 2007 World Cup was held in China. The German national team won for the second consecutive tournament, becoming the only team in World Cup history to retain their title.
The final score of the championship game was 2 to 0 after Germany defeated Brazil. This outcome not only won them the trophy but also kept Germany undefeated in the tournament.
Although no golden goals were scored in the 2007 World Cup, the rule was eliminated by FIFA for the following years.
The tournament’s top scorer was Brazilian player Marta Vieira da Silva, with a total of 7 goals. She was also named the best player of all the participating teams.
The title of best goalkeeper of the tournament was given to the German player Nadine Angerer.
2011
Japan won the 2011 Women’s World Cup champion title. They played the United States in the final game, but after a 2 to 2 draw at the end of regulation, the game went to a penalty shootout.
Japan won it 3 to 1, which was very surprising due to their low ranking at the beginning of the tournament. After they earned the cap, Japan became the first Asian national team to win the World Cup trophy.
Japanese player Homare Sawa was named as both the best player and the tournament’s top scorer. The best goalkeeper was given to Hope Solo, a player on the United States women’s national team.
2015
In 2015, the United States won the Women’s World Cup for the third time. The championship game was a 2011 rematch between the United States and Japan. However, the final score was much less close than the previous match, with the US winning 5 to 2.
Carli Lloyd scored three goals in the first 16 minutes. This set the record for the fastest hat trick in World Cup history. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath scored the other two goals for the United States. For Japan, their two goals were scored by Ōgimi and Johnson.
The top scorers of the tournament were American soccer player Carli Lloyd and German player Celia Sasic. Lloyd was named the best player for the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
2019
In the 2019 Women’s World Cup, the United States walked away as champions for the fourth time after defeating the Netherlands in the final match. The final score was 2 to 0. Rapinoe scored a PK drawn by Alex Morgan, and Rose Lavelle scored a goal from the top of the box.
The tournament’s top scorers were the England player Ellen White and the United States players Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe.

All of the games of the tournament were broadcasted globally, and because of this, there was a combined audience of about 1.12 billion people.
2023
The first game of the Women’s World Cup will kick off on 20 July 2023. As a giant in the history of the Women’s World Cup, the United States women’s national team has already cemented its legacy. Four of the four USWNT teams have won the tournament since 1991.
